Healthy Rebuilding Workshop

On October 27, 2005, a national panel of experts convened to develop the remediation protocols for the Healthy Rebuilding Demonstration Project based on scientific research and best practice.

The Objectives of the meeting were:

  • To gain perspective from local organizations and field practitioners regarding the public health impacts of Hurricanes Katrina/Rita;
  • To review and comment on a set of clean-up and rebuilding protocols; and
  • To review existing training materials and develop a recommended approach for training workers who will be involved in the clean-up and rebuilding efforts.

Discussion topics included worker safety, work sequencing, resident education, product and materials selection, debris disposal, and regulatory requirements. The work group identified relevant existing trainings and determined the training needs and regulatory requirements for workers carrying out clean-up and rebuilding activities in the Hurricane Impact Areas. Final protocols included debris removal, cleaning, HEPA vacuuming, treatment of wall cavities with a borate solution, and moisture removal
