Healthy Homes Expert Panel Meeting
Atlanta, Georgia
December 11-12, 2007

On December 11 and 12, 2007, The National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened a meeting of experts from across the country to weigh the strength of scientific evidence on a variety of housing interventions and their effects on health and the environment. There were five expert panels, each covering a different area within the field of healthy housing. The panels included: interior biological agent interventions, interior chemical agent interventions, external exposures, structural deficiencies, and the intersection between house and community. The experts reviewed the scientific literature within their designated work groups to determine the adequacy of intervention research.

The meeting will lead to a report that describes those interventions that have sufficient evidence to move toward implementation, identifies gaps in existing research and prioritizes needs for additional intervention research. The report also will serve as the basis for a follow-up meeting that focuses on translating the findings of the expert panel into programs and policies.

Staff from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Center for Healthy Housing and planning committee members completed a preliminary literature search of relevant published intervention studies. The results were shared with all panel members. Each panel member served as a "primary" and "secondary" reviewer on an assigned number of intervention studies, which were discussed further by the entire panel during the meeting. In addition, panel members recommended additional intervention studies that were not included in the initial literature review.
